All cars will soon be connected, and this “data explosion” is set to transform the auto industry and car rental. Car-generated data will be used to expand on-demand rentals, inform fleet planning to increase utilization and RPU, drive new ancillary sales and marketing opportunities, and make travel safer overall. But it also comes with issues to resolve, such as setting guidelines to control and access the data and protect the privacy of the consumer. This blue-ribbon panel representing car rental, automakers, vehicle associations, and tech providers will dissect these issues and lay out the path to this new data economy.

We keep hearing that the next evolution of car rental is an on-demand fleet — but what does that mean if you’re not a major car rental brand? Karim Kaddoura created Virtuo, an independent car rental company that is fully on-demand and mobile. Not carsharing or peer-to-peer, Virtuo uses an owned fleet to provide daily roundtrip rentals for leisure and corporate customers. Kaddoura will walk attendees through his experience on creating his company, from implementing the technology, marketing the service, and managing the staff to operating a dispersed fleet and understanding the KPIs for success. This seminar takes the theory of on-demand rentals the next step to an actual working model that independent and smaller operators can follow.

Ponente: Paul Hayes, Expedia; Carlos Hernandez, Mex Rent a Car

Going Inclusive for LATAM Markets

By being a market “in development” like LATAM, it is of some importance to offer a product that invites customers to enjoy a satisfactory car rental experience. The inclusive product is transparent, time saving and does not focus its profitability on the insurance sales at the counter, which normally causes friction among customers who seem to be more willing to pay a bit more as long as they can save time and have a frictionless experience while picking up the car.

Presenter: Paul Hayes, Expedia; Carlos Hernandez, Mex Rent a Car

The advent of ride hailing and Transportation Network Companies (TLCs) such as Uber and Lyft may have been the most transformational — and disruptive — change to transportation in our lifetimes. As the former longest serving Chairman of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), Matt Daus played a pivotal role in its regulation and evolution. Matt will give his insider’s perspective on how the taxi and limo industries, insurance carriers, and regulators responded and how the auto rental industry can learn from what worked and what didn’t. Still bigger transformation lies ahead. Now Transportation Technology Chair at the City University of New York’s Transportation Research Center, Matt has a unique view of the new multi-modal, integrated, on-demand services coming online and how new legislation and regulation could affect car rental. He’ll share his thoughts on how the car rental industry can deal with new entrants, and how the industry will be best poised to take part in a connected and autonomous world.
